A lawyer for Media Works sent animesuki a letter asking them to stop distributing their properties. Pugyuru happens to be a Media Works property.
I managed to get a copy of the letter forwarded to me from animesuki, since I was worried about Pugyuru (and my legal future). While I am not allowed to post a good deal of the content of the letter by animesuki's wishes, I will say that Pugyuru's being remove was maybe implied, but not explicit. The titles listed were the big money-makers that have potential (though nothing confirmed) for licensing out of Japan.
Frankly, Pugyuru fansubs can't hurt anyone. No one anywhere in the world is selling videos of Pugyuru. No R2 home video of this title exists at all, so no one can ever claim that I'm taking money from Media Works.
What I have done is help spread Pugyuru's popularity. There is a small amount of merchandise available for Pugyuru, including manga (4-panel like Azumanga Daioh) and I think a Cheko-chan plushie. With Pugyuru becoming more popular, people may be enticed to buy Pugyuru merchandise. I'm basically spreading ads for this show.
I couldn't argue this if we were subbing the Count of Monte Cristo, a high budget show that has a 99.9% chance of a US release within 2 years, likely within 2005. But I'm not holding my breath for Pugyuru, and I'll leave up our torrents until they ask me to stop.
Well... scarywater has taken a better safe than sorry attitude towards Media Works, and has removed the Pugyuru torrent. We're deliberating wheter or not to find a new place to host this particular torrent, but until then, it'll be on our bot on IRC.
